TDHCA awards $9.8 million in grants to help Texans exit homelessness
The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) is putting $9.8 million to work helping Texans move from housing instability to safe, permanent homes.
TDHCA has announced the award of $9.8 million in competitive Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) to 51 subrecipients across Texas. The funding will support local efforts to connect individuals and families experiencing homelessness or a housing crisis with permanent housing, while also helping prevent homelessness before it occurs.
The TDHCA Governing Board approved the awards at its September 3, 2026, meeting, allocating Texas’ Federal Fiscal Year 2026 ESG funds to communities and organizations across Texas. The awarded funds will be available beginning November 1, 2026.
“These funds serve as a vital resource for some of our most vulnerable Texans, opening the door for many to experience more stable and sustainable housing conditions,” said Bobby Wilkinson, TDHCA Executive Director. “They give our local partners the tools they need to prevent homelessness and help people quickly regain housing stability.”
Funded activities through the ESG Program include emergency shelter operations, street outreach, homelessness prevention, and rapid re-housing assistance. Depending on the circumstances, assistance can include help with rent, utilities and other costs that allow individuals and families to secure or maintain housing.
Funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the ESG Program strengthens local communities’ ability to respond to homelessness while helping Texans overcome housing crises and move toward greater stability. A list of ESG awardees follows on the next page. Please note, The award list is subject to change should any subrecipient be determined to be ineligible.
